Dharma Dummies Episode 38: The Incident Parts 1 and 2 Reactions
Download | Duration: 01:14:27
The Dummies are back on the island. New and improved. We've been gone a while taking care of other business, so we offer this special reactions episode to the season five finale, "The Incident," Parts 1 and 2 as a gift to our podcasting audience. We debate and discuss free will, destiny, tapestries, smoke monsters and a man named Jacob. Enjoy.
After this we will be embarking on a time jump back to 6 months, when I had more time to edit these podcasts things. We will be finally getting to our reactions to "Dead is Dead," "Some like it Hoth," "The Variable," and "Follow the Leader." Plus we'll be revisiting "The Incident" one more time before season six arrives. And we're going to squeeze in a few character analysis episodes too... Ben Linus anyone? We're glad to be back and we hope to here from anyone still left out there in Hiatusland.
Namaste,
Clay

So GREAT to hear you again. Excellent recap. I typed this long comment on the message board, hit some combination of keys and *bloop* it was gone. Will try to find time to rewrite and send.
When you get back to further discussions of Jacob and MIB (and I agree a prolonged conversation between these two would be extraordinary) can you explain what you think is the end game. If Jacob dies and his body is burned, does he have similar smokey existence until an unburied option becomes available? There were several 'white smoke' sightings. So he picks another body (Sayid comes to mind) and moves back into Taweret Suites. Is just proving MIB wrong the final scene in Lost? Progress.
I started the hiatus re-watching Season 1 and posted comments (thanks for the shout). But summer got complicated and the ARG is taking most of my LOST allotted time. However, I will get back to it and finish S1. If you need to move to some other location because of spoilers, please do so.
Happy baby sounds are always good to hear! Lotto

Hurray! Return of The Dummies! Great to hear all is well with C&C (and families), and I've never been prouder of a design as I am of those DD-Logo's, as I can confidently say nothing else I've ever done has started in Photoshop/Illustrator and ended up on an actual BABY, rad-town
Looking forward to getting back on the Dummy-Board as soon as I can and talking to all my fellow Dummies again! Wussup Lotto, Elton/Scott, etc.

"The Hurricane of Feedback" how are you! Last I read you were dealing with a very large spider. Looking forward to your call-in comments.
I think I'm overdue for some DD swag. It now has deeper meaning.

I'm a first time listener, and wanted to commend you on a very well thought-out podcast on the Incident. The two of you seem to be very in tune with the Island! In particular, I thought your connections between MIB/DWG/Esau/Nemesis and Widmore was spot on.
While I really like the parallels with the Job story, I also have my reservations about an automatic connection of absolute good and evil for Jacob and MIB. With all the references to Egyptian, Greek, and perhaps Roman gods in the story, it seems that Jacob and MIB reflect more of the moral ambiguity found in polytheistic religions, where gods had very human-like qualities, only with greater power and immortality. Certainly Jacob is more good and MIB more evil, but they don't seem as absolute as God and Satan.
Of course, due to Jacob's limited amount of screen time, I'm basing this more on the actions of the Hostiles/Others that appears to be unchallenged by Jacob. If anything, he is much more hands-off in the world than the Jewish or Christian writings depict God as being. However, future revelations in Season 6 might show that he was more involved than we realized!
I look forward to any response you have and to your future podcasts as we trudge our way through the hiatus.

This has stuck with me a lot since seeing it. Its part 2 of the Ew.com pre-finale interview with Darlton, and they sort of explain the concept of the time loop, and specifically what you guys were getting at with Eloise.
I also watched all the scenes featuring Flocke recently, and the one line that really seemed emphasized was right before Ben and Flocke enter the chamber of Jacob's, Flocke says by killing Jacob "things WILL change".
If there is an Alternate Universe (since your recording of this Podcast, there were those vids at comic-con, so your theories on that matter may be have changed a bit), it will have to do with a slight changes resulting from the lack of Jacob. We were shown these flashbacks not to say every event was important (Jack getting a candy bar most likely didn't shift his entire worldview/character, though Snickers will have you believe having that moment with a candy bar probably gives you time to reflect on how your father was actually helping you when he put you on "time out"), but that Jacob was overall intervening, whether it was in the name of free-choice or his own machinations.
But it sounds like from the candidate business with Lapidus in the finale and this season 6 poster, that there will be a new Jacob soon.

Also, Chris, thanks for making Juliet make sense in the finale! It helps when someone lays it out like that, and makes the character seem less arbitrary. I'm sticking with Jack being sorta in a state like Locke at the end of season 2 - when he let the Hatch blow up - it was just sort of an off-track impulsion. The Kate excuse was shite.

Didn't Widmore say, I don't know why Richard say you were gonna die, but I'm gonna do everything in my power to no let that happen.
